This week brought an exciting opportunity to contribute to the changing landscape of Rothbury, one of Northumberland's most historic towns. The removal of two famous weeping ash trees, planted nearly 110 years ago and located in the heart of Rothbury, was a necessary decision due to their decline from ash dieback. To replace them, we decided to plant weeping willows (Salix Babylonica), which sparked a lot of interest from the village locals. Even Katie from Rothbury trees came out to assist in the planting of these new additions.
While there were mixed feelings about the decision to fell the historic giants, the locals understood that it's just the circle of life. In years to come, if you're passing by, pay attention to the right-hand side as you enter the village because two mighty, majestic weeping willows WILL stand strong for many years to come.
